So after dabbling with the idea of racing cyclocross for a few years, I decided to give it a shot. I quickly custom built an All City Nature Boy to serve as my single speed cyclocross racer / fixed gear commuter. With that covered, I had a crash course in cyclocross mounts and dismounts that I would have to do. After only a few rides on the new bike and 2 training sessions with mounts and dismounts, it was race day. I entered in 2 races: First Timers Fun Race and the CX4 / Men’s C race. After a few warm up laps it was time for the first race. Including me, there was only 3 people and of those only 1 who looked like he could contend for the win. His name was Mark and it turns out it was his first cyclocross race too. Once the race was underway, Mark got the initial lead down the long straightaway seeing as he has gears, but I quickly caught up as the course got more technical and was in the lead with about 2/3rds of a lap left. I pulled away and won with about a minute lead. Good times! Stay tuned for part 2 where I do the CX4 / Men’s C race!
